As India is known to be majority Hindu, the recently passed Citizenship Act is being used as a tool to shun the Muslim migrants of India. The Citizenship Amendment Bill prohibits illegal immigrants from becoming Indian citizens. In the new bill, a person must have lived or worked for India’s government for at least eleven years before applying to become a citizen. But what makes the new bill islamophobic? There’s certain exceptions for those who are apart of six different communities: Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi, and Christians. As you can see, Muslims are the only minority group not part of the exceptions.

These communities will only have to live or work in India's government for six years, instead of eleven, to be seen as a legal citizen. The National Register of Citizens decided there was an “error” when trying to identify illegal immigrants, as they realized many Bengali Hindus would be one of the illegal immigrants. Sadly, India has a long history of Islamophobia. India’s government is using their own faith and discriminatory beliefs to determine citizen eligibility, which is against their country's constitution that prevents religious discrimination.
